Did our child have a Zoloft overdose or allergic reaction? Our son was prescribed Zoloft, and the dosage was started at 25mg per day, and was gradually increased to 100mg twice a day. After 5 days, he developed severe rash on his torso, back of legs, and the back of his neck. The doctor stopped the Zoloft that day, ordered liver function tests, and a holter monitor test. We are concerned that his dosage was set too high. He is 12, and weighs 85 lbs. The Zoloft was prescribed for OCD, phobias, and tourettes. Please give us your opinion. Are his symptoms allergic reaction or an overdose?

anyone ever had an allergic reaction to zoloft? Also, I meant to say they arn't for sure if it was an allergic reaction. I took zoloft for about a week for my depression. and I stopped taking it yesterday because I was having a lot of side effects. such as nausea, dizziness, extremely tired, extreme head aches. and then since stopping, my face has gotton all weird. Its all red, and blotchy, itchy and dry feeling. It hurts really bad, and my chin area feels kind of swollen. I went to the doctor, and they are sure if it was an allergic reaction to the medicine or not. what else would it have been. Its too much of a coincidence for it not to be related right? any one had a similar experience with zoloft? thanks. My doctor just told me to take benedryl.

kickerl515 replied: "well you should never just stop taking a medication. Zoloft takes a while to work and until it does you will experience symptoms. If you experience extreme tiredness contact your doctor for dosage may be altered. Overall I have not had any experience with zoloft. If you really think you are depressed take these medications for they might help. If you think something else is causing it try to find natural ways to cure. Avoid sugar, caffeine and white breads. Start eating whole grains. Avoid fast food. Drink plenty of water. Try to exercise. Do this for 2 weeks and see how you feel."

Adrienne replied: "Those are all symptoms related to zoloft and most other anti depressants/anti anxiety meds. Nausea, dizziness, being tired are the most common complents. If you're skin is reacting badly to the drug, just stop taking it. You can take benedryl, but that always makes me feel anxious. He could always prescribe something else. But those ARE the symptoms of an allergic reaction to zoloft. If it were me, I'd stop taking them immediately. Your reactions COULD worsen. Just ask to try something else."

Allergic reactions to Zoloft? I started 50mg doses for the first 4 days with no problems, and i felt the effect of the medication right away. My doctor then had me go up to 100mg doses for the next 4 days. The 1st day i started the 100 mg dose, I felt maybe I had too much in me, and the next evening I ended up breaking out in a rash on my upper thighs(hips), and inner elbow. It has now been 4 days since taking a dose, and i am still breaking out in the rash now behind my knees. How long does it take for this stuff to be out of my system so this rash stops? Have any of you experienced the same reaction? The Day I found out about the rash I did contact my doctor right away about the rash, and thats why i am no longer taking the med. She said I should call back Monday to tell her if the rash is gone.

cubsfreak2001 replied: "I have heard of these sorts of reactions, Zoloft is a chemical that has slow release properties so its effects can last for days to weeks, until the body completely rids itself of the medicine. I would suggest consulting your doctor. Especially if you start to get short of breath or have any breathing or swallowing difficulties."

Tom replied: "Talk to your doc, hun. You might need your dose adjusted again. Wish you well."

Lacey G replied: "Did you let your doctor know about your reaction? It should be about out of your system by now. Maybe it's something else besides Zoloft. I'd see my MD."

possibly allergic to zoloft...? ive been having a terribly itchy rash since starting zoloft last february when i got pregnant with my daughter, i was previously on paxil an switched because of the pregnancy, an im still currently on zoloft, an almost three months post partum, and i still have this extremely itchy rash, it comes an goes an its mainly on my arms and legs if i itch it it seems like it gets worse and spreads and when i dont itch it it usually goes away, but it will come back at random times, do you think this is an allergic reaction to the medicine? ive gotten terrible stretch marks during my pregnancy from the insanely itchyness ive experienced and i just HAD to scratch, i thought it was PUPPS the pregnancy rash, but now that im putting everything together and that i still have it, im thinking i might be allergic to my zoloft, i also get terrible night sweats and havent really been intrested in sex or anything like that. i take 100mgs a day. does this sound like an allergic reaction? or am i just going crazy. i also get shakey and randomly hot, i really need some advice because ive been scratching so hard ill bleed. ughhhhh

Rev.Michelle replied: "It could be. Talk to your Dr."

is this an allergic reaction? I've been taking zoloft for almost a week. I noticed a small spot in the bend of my right arm that is itchy, I can't remember when it appeared but it wasn't that long ago. Now I have another itchy spot under my underarm. It's not a welp or a bump, it's just an itchy spot no bigger than a dime. Is this an allergic reaction or just something totally unrelated?

uhhuhcheckit replied: "It's hard to say without seeing an image. Itchiness often results from allergy, virus, or parasite (insect bite)"

allergic reaction? My daughter has been on zoloft for 12 days and just started to have a itchy skin rash-could she be allergic to the zoloft?

sweetiefreck replied: "she could, call the doctor"

Elly replied: "Yes, but a skin reaction is also common in small children. Still you need to take her to a doctor as soon as possible. Schedule a same day, go to urgent care, if she's getting worse and worse go to the ER NOW!! Definately though get her in today, and take her medication bottle with you."

I have a Zoloft question for OCD? I have been taking Zoloft for 5 years for treating OCD and I have been successful for it reducing my OCD symptoms. Now I can't get Zoloft because of money for a month, do you think my body will have an allergic reaction or will my OCD worsen like it was before I was diagnosed with it and put on medication like Zoloft for it?

Michelle replied: "It's really dangerous to suddenly stop taking Zoloft. You have to stop gradually, or else you may experience serious side effects."

shanii replied: "I agree with Michelle. You could have serious withdrawals if you suddenly stop taking your medication. You may experience symptoms such as Anxiety, Irritability, Dizziness, Burning or tingling sensations, Confusion, Headache's, Insomnia or Tiredness, as well as the return of (or worsening) some of your OCD symptoms. You should see a Doctor about weening off slowly."

Taken Zoloft for 2 weeks, now have developed a rash...? I was on 50 mg for a week, then went up to 100 mg. Have been on the 100 mg for a week as well... today I notice that I have broken out into a rash all over my arms, stomach, and back. Has anybody else done this? And do you think it *is* from the Zoloft... I mean, its been 2 weeks... if it was an allergic reaction wouldn't it have happened before now?

oldtimekid2 replied: "I would talk to your doctor ASAP and/or go in to the walk-in clinic if you can. says: "Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur: Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); bizarre behavior; black or bloody stools; chest pain; confusion; decreased bladder control; decreased concentration; decreased coordination..." The list goes on much longer, but the first ones are the main point. You need to contact a doctor or get into the clinic ASAP according to the warnings on the drug. It is possible that the increase was enough to get the reaction... maybe 50 mg wasn't enough to give your body the reaction and 100 mg was enough. Either way, the doctor can verify that and change your prescription if needed. I would also be careful about any of the antidepressants like this because of the increased risk of suicidal thoughts and tendencies (also listed on the same page listed above). Good luck and I hope I helped!"

Should I take Zoloft again, will it work a second time? I have been off Zoloft since October 2006.? I took it for almost a year and it worked good. The only side affect was poor judgement, and slighty hyperactivity (but I was hyper and A.D.D. before i got depressed, so it was natural for me I like the way I am, ) . But now that I am prepared for it and I have friends and family that are here to help me keep my conscence. I tried fluvoxamine for a while prescribed by my doctor. But I had a slighty allergic reaction to it. I want to do zoloft again. But will it work? I want to be off it as soon as i can. I have tried to get better on my own, but have some problems with certain things that regularly occur in life and every time I get better, when they occur I get down again. Uh. I just need information! So, any advice about zoloft from people who have taken it or know about it would be great. Thank you so much, Kayla I would just like all people who are going to reply to this know that. If you dont know a lot about depression or haven't been there before, this probably isn't the question for you to answer. And answer like learn to deal with it is okay if you back it up with a lot. But really, depression isn't just that easy. Believe me I try every day, I try very hard. But it's gotten to the point where I need some help. I'd really rather not take pills. To be honest, they scare me to death. But I dont know what else to do. I dont want to be on pills for life. I just want them to help me get back on my feet and solve my problems. Because apparently what I'm doing isn't working. Sometimes I get down, but I try and exercise daily, eat right, do things I like. I get feeling better then my world comes crashing down and I'm back where I started.

Riot replied: "generally the consensus about all SSRI's is you go on the first time for a year, if it recurs, u have to stay on two years, if it recurs again, u stay on for life yes people take SSRIs more than once in thier life and it can work as well as it did the first time...unfortuatnely there is no guarantee, its touch and go good luck"

boxmaker40 replied: "I would suggest you do alot of research on zoloft. There have been alot of people who have commited suicide from taking the medication. It makes you feel great for a while, but it can have the opposite affect after. It also takes it's toll on your brain. I tried it and I would never take it again. I try to do things that make me happy when I'm down or depressed. I do things that make me laugh, and I keep busy. Life does suck sometimes, but learning to deal with it, will make you stronger."

Heidi Anne replied: "You can take it again. I was kinda like you, I was on it for about a year or 2 and wanted to try to get better on my own and I tried a few other pills but decided that I needed to go back to Zoloft I have been back on it for I think almost 3 years now. It works the same and everything. If you havent tried it yet I might try Welbutrin....I tried it and it helped and I take that with my Zoloft. I know this is a hard thing to go through but just try to take it one day at a time. Good Luck"

Zoloft causing throat pain? sometimes when i take zoloft my throat feels weird and i have a sort of heart burn feeling, it seems to happen when i dont have too much water to drink with it. is this an allergic reaction?

VA replied: "More likely, it's just the effects of the pill getting caught in your throat on its way down. If it were an allergic reaction, you'd be feeling it all the time, not just when you dry-swallow. The same thing happens to me too, when I try to swallow a pill without enough water. Make sure you always have lots of water to gulp your Zo down, and you shouldn't have that problem any more."
